Hooking up a teleprinter to a computer is not uncommon in the teletype world. It's been done since digital computers first existed. Since the underpinnings of modern computers, interfaces, networks, and charsets have evolved largely from the old teleprinter technology, the minimum circuitry to get the old talking to the new is relatively simple.
